Skyscraper

Etymology map of skyscraper
Reaching up to the sky or as tall as the clouds

The term “skyscraper” originates from the words sky and scrape, evoking the image of something that reaches or touches the sky. In many languages, this name was adopted directly or translated as a calque. However, in others, it evolved into the metaphorical “cloud scratcher,” as seen in German (Wolkenkratzer), Romanian (Zgârie-nori), and Arabic (ناطحة سحاب, Nāṭiḥat al-Saḥāb).
