“L’Hexagone” is a nickname for mainland France, referring to the country’s roughly hexagonal shape on the map. This shape is defined by France’s natural borders: the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the English Channel to the north, Belgium and Luxembourg to the northeast, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy to the east, the Mediterranean Sea to the southeast, and Spain and Andorra to the south.
